Software Engineer – QA (remote EMEA)

Job Description

Software Engineer  – QA

Within the SAP Solutions engineering group, at SUSE, we provide solutions for customers running business-critical workloads based on SAP systems, simplifying and modernizing their operations with bespoke projects that leverage our long established expertise in this particular field.

Join one of our engineering teams in developing project Trento, an application specifically tailored to complement our “SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Application” operative system, providing the ability to validate, monitor and operate mission-critical SAP HANA databases and the S4/HANA enterprise suite.

Our typical users are SAP system administrators who are responsible for software applications powering huge operations, like global manufacturing, retail and logistics: few minutes of downtime may cause huge losses in revenue; we want to enable them in preventing this from happening.

Requirements

The ideal candidate is a passionate, driven and smart software engineer who takes pride in delivering excellent software, with a wide breadth of skills and a particular interest in fostering the DevOps culture within a cross-functional team.

We are looking for a fast learner, able to embrace a diverse and advanced technology stack, knowledgeable on the latest tech trends and best practices, pragmatic yet with an outstanding attention to details.

We will expect you to be:

  • very proficient with Infrastructure-as-Code, software automation, configuration management and end-to-end testing tools for web applications;
  • experienced with CI/CD best practices;
  • proficient with at least a couple of different common programming languages, able and willing to learn more;
  • knowledgeable on generic fundamentals about software engineering;
  • very familiar with the Linux operating system;
  • familiar with open-source software development practices;
  • familiar with cloud-native technologies, e.g. containers, kubernetes;
  • confident with Git and other basic tools for the job;
  • fluent with English, both spoken and written;
  • a well navigated remote worker, located within maximum 4 hours of distance from the UTC time-zone.

We would also greatly appreciate:

  • an established track record of open-source software upstream contributions (strong plus here!);
  • familiarity with any of the following specific topics:
    • the Cypress testing framework;
    • the Javascript programming language and the ReactJS web frontend framework;
    • the Elixir programming language and the Erlang/OTP platform;
    • Ansible and Terraform IaC automation frameworks;
    • Domain Driven Design and related software design patterns like CQRS/ES.

We do not put any particular emphasis on formal education or actual years of experience: what matters most is what you can do, and how well you do it.

Scope

As a QA Engineer, you will be part of a world-class engineering team, contributing to the development of one project aimed at operating large-scale cloud, hybrid and bare-metal systems with a very specific and complex purpose: running mission-critical SAP software.

You will be onboarded to contribute to a well established and extensive codebase, participate in daily video-conference team meetings, collaborate with your peers via real-time chat, GitHub and/or other various tools, ultimately presenting your technical achievements to stakeholders in iterative time boxes.

You will help improve the quality, performance, and resiliency of the project, by developing comprehensive test suites and striving for full automation coverage of key features, advocating and directly contributing to our Continuous Integration and Delivery practices, across both backend and frontend code.

You will cooperate very closely with the Product Owner to facilitate release management, ensuring we deliver new releases according to the highest quality standards.

You will be required to push the envelope in multiple fronts: some features will be very difficult to test, and you will be tasked to adapt our Quality Assurance process according to the peculiarities of the team, the product, the problem domain and the technology.

Perks

Working for an established software company comes with some usual benefits: competitive pay, established career paths, and all the hardware and software you’ll ever need.

In addition to that, you will join a team with a remote-first mindset, geographically distributed across Europe, championing a healthy work/life balance via flexible working hours and vacation policies.

Open-source is at the heart of SUSE: that means you will spend the majority of your work time on your public track record, contributing to the global FOSS community.

Your personal growth will be fostered by sponsoring attendance to tech conferences, internal exchange and mentoring programs, hackathons, tech talks and learning courses.
